![]() As the Beatles and other groups moved out of the world of pure 45 pop, the Bee Gees were left filling a significant gap, but they have failed to develop musically - Bee Gees First remains their most interesting album, 'New York Mining Disaster' their greatest song. Their achievement was to take some aspects of the Sixties English group style - the harsh harmonies, the `impure' lead voice, the risky melodies - and apply them to traditional pop they were never a rock group. In this style the Gibbs are facile songwriters (their songs are widely used by other cabaret artists) but doubts remain about their place in rock history. The essence of Bee Gees music is the self-pitying ballad, lushly orchestrated around Robin's ingratiating tremulo and his brothers' distinctive nasal harmonies. In 1975, after a period of little success, they returned to the top of the charts with two smash hits, 'Jive Talkin" and 'Nights On Broadway', from the Arif Mardin-produced Main Course (RSO), an album that saw them producing their nasal harmonies in front of funkier rhythms than ever before. In 1969, Robin Gibb left the group to go solo but he was comparatively unsuccessful and by 1972 the group was together again and getting American Top Twenty hits like `My World' and 'Run To Me'. ![]() ![]() This success was repeated in America and the Bee Gees quickly became established worldwide with such re-cords as 'Massachusetts' and 'I've Gotta Get A Message To You'. Also in the group were Vince Melouney (guitar) and Colin Peterson (drums). In 1967, when Barry was 19 and Robin and Maurice 17, they returned to England, were signed up by Robert Stigwood and Polydor, and had their first English hit, 'New York Mining Disaster 1941'. The brothers Gibb began performing to-gether publicly as children in Manchester and became a successful pop group in Australia (whence their family had emigrated) while still teenagers. Timeless: The All-Time Greatest Hits collects the cream of the crop from both their late-60s/early-70s baroque pop and brilliant mid-70s funk and disco-pop periods. Jewelcases / Trays / Protection jackets The Bee Gees were impressive enough to have two amazing stretches when they not only topped the charts, but helped define the music of the era.As a final note, the European version of this collection includes two songs which were annoyingly left off the American version: "Jumbo" and "My World. A wonderful, stellar collection through and through from one of the rock era's biggest, brightest, most influential, and most exciting acts. These include "Emotion," which was popularized by Samantha Sang and later Destiny's Child "Heartbreaker," which was a comeback smash for Dionne Warwick the chart-topping "Islands in the Stream," which was a hit for Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton and "Immortality," a European hit for Celine Dion. Disc two continues the formula, beginning with the cultural phenomenon that was "Stayin' Alive" and continuing with "How Deep Is Your Love," "Night Fever," "Too Much Heaven," "Tragedy," and "Love You Inside and Out." Disc two also includes Barry Gibb's hit duet with Barbra Streisand, "Guilty," as well as major European hits such as "You Win Again" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls," and later American hits such as "One," "Alone," and their superb 2001 single "This Is Where I Came In." As a bonus treat, the album includes four newly recorded versions of Bee Gees songs which became hits for other artists. Disc one includes their major '60s and early-'70s hits, up to "You Should Be Dancing." Included are their major American hits, such as "New York Mining Disaster 1941," "Massachusetts," "To Love Somebody," "Lonely Days," "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," "Jive Talkin'," "Nights on Broadway," and "Words," as well as major European hits, such as "World" and the gorgeous "Don't Forget to Remember." Also included on disc one is the former B-side "If I Can't Have You" (popularized, of course, by Yvonne Elliman). Their Greatest Hits: The Record stands as the best Bee Gees hits package available, assembling both vital European and American hits from their early-'60s period all the way through to 2001.
